A beautiful Commander's grade Croix d'Honneur de l'Œuvre Humanitaire here. Suspended on an original neck ribbon, although one of the ties at the end appears to have been broken. A post 1954 example. Enamel is in excellent condition and displays wonderfully. In the center of this order is an engraved portrait of Marianne facing right, encircled by an enameled blue border inscribed ŒUVRE HUMANITAIRE (Humanitarian Works). It is suspended from enameled laurels, also in excellent condition. The reverse is blank.
The Union Philanthropique des Oeuvres Françaises was founded in Paris in 1937 to encourage charitable works. In 1954 the Union merged with Oeuvre Humanitaire, founded in Toulouse in 1920, and subsequent awards have been made by the Comité de Récompense de l'Oeuvre Humanitaire et du Mérite Philanthropique for voluntary humanitarian, social and philanthropic achievement.
