The Military Medal is a French military decoration , established on January 22, 1852 by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte intended for rank and file soldiers, non-commissioned officers, and exceptionally, for general officers and marshals of France. It is sometimes called the Legion of Honor for non-commissioned officers and other ranks, the Medal of the Brave, or the Jewel of the Nation

The Military Medal has been, since its creation, the reward for campaigns from the Second Empire to the present day. It brings together under its motto "Valor and Discipline" the most anonymous soldiers and the most popular heroes such as Georges Guynemer or Jean Moulin.
