This medal was instituted in 1948 and awarded in that year only. A total of only 2,930 awards were made. Sándor Petőfi (1823 to 1849 or 1856) was a great Hungarian poet and revolutionary, active in the uprising of 1848 against Habsburg rule for Hungarian independence. This example is in excellent condition and features a sewn-on pin and catch for wear.
