An early example of the Defense of the Caucasus medal here. Steel mount on the reverse, with a high pin and typical wartime configuration. This medal and it's ribbon show considerable wear, which is visible in photos. The medal itself looks to have been cleaned at some point. Ribbon has some fraying at the edges.
 
The Medal "For the Defence of the Caucasus" was awarded to all participants in the defence of the Caucasus - soldiers of the Red Army, sailors of the Navy, troops of the NKVD, as well as persons from the civilian population who took part in the defence of the Caucasus during the battle for the Caucasus.
