An early Hungarian "Medal of Mining Merit" - awarded by the Peoples Republic of Hungary during the leadership of Rakosi Matyas. This is the first variation of this award, it was established in 1949 and only awarded in one class. It was elaborated into three classes in 1957 under the leadership of Kadar Janos.
Awarded for years of service, the recipient would have either spent a number of years "below ground" or a greater number of years "above ground", in the service of the mining industry.
