From 1930 until the 1970s, the National Guard Bureau held annual indoor rifle matches and presented individual awards. Since that time the awards have been for teams only. From the inception of the matches until shortly after the Vietnam War, the individual awards were medals.

Produced by Blackington and dated 1965, this medal comes with its original box and has the ribbon bars "HIGH INDIVIDUAL" and "STATE." On the reverse, the medal is only marked "BLACKINGTON" as is common for later model NGB shooting medals. It should be noted that this is the somewhat less common PISTOL competition medal rather than the standard crossed rifles model.
